Cowboys drop hard fought game 21-14 to Broncos

In a season-opening game between two in-county teams, the Belmond-Klemme Broncos had four turnovers but Clarion-Goldfield-Dows/CAL couldn’t seem to take advantage of all of that as the Cowboys lost 21-14.

“These kids know each other, and there’s a lot of respect between the two teams,” stated head coach Newt Lingenfelter. “It was a hard fought game. The Broncos defense played well, and they have an excellent returning quarterback.”

The Cowboys struck first, forcing a fumble at the goal line after the Broncos had driven the opening kickoff into scoring position. Alex Machuca pounced on the loose pigskin in the end zone, putting them up 6-0 after the two-point try failed. A 20-yard touchdown run, followed by a one-yard burst to paydirt right before halftime, put B-K up 14-6 at the break.
