Wednesday school schedule change for next year

In the spring of 2017, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows school board announced that the district would be scheduling a weekly Wednesday early dismissal for students during the 2018-2019 school year. The change was implemented to allow for professional development.

At the time, 75 percent of teachers supported moving to the weekly Wednesday early dismissal. When polled this year, some opinions had changed; 64.7 percent of the teaching staff still support early dismissals on Wednesday, while 35.3 percent do not.

This year, Superintendent Bob Olson suggested changing the early out from 1:30 to 2 p.m. to get in more instructional time. When asked whether the early dismissal should be moved, teacher response was varied: 58.8 percent said yes, 35.3 percent said no, and others had more specific comments.

With the majority willing to try it, the school board this week approved the suggested calendar with the weekly 2 p.m. early dismissal. Important dates for the 2018-2019 school year include August 23 for the first day of school; Christmas break starting with an early out on Friday, December 21, and students returning to school on January 3.
