Wastewater discharge stopped in Clarion

CLARION—After replacing a pump Monday morning, the city of Clarion stopped discharging untreated wastewater to Eagle Creek shortly after noon.

The city’s wastewater treatment system began discharging Sunday, bypassing the treatment system when one of two pumps failed. The city estimates 480,000 gallons of wastewater were discharged to the Wright Country creek which flows into the Des Moines River.

High stream flows after recent rains will reduce negative impacts to the stream.

The DNR recommends keeping children and pets away from Eagle Creek for another day.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.
