Steve Sebby's Hardware Hank closing its doors

Steve Sebby has owned the Coast to Coast (and now Hardware Hank) hardware store on Main Street for 36 years. Both the store and Sebby himself have been part of Clarion for longer than that. However, though Sebby will still be in the area, enjoying retirement (or maybe another job), Hardware Hank will soon be closing its doors.

Sebby said he considers Clarion the best place in the world. He’s enjoyed being part of it through the store. “I made a lot of friends over the years,” Sebby said. “In a small town, I think anyone who has a retail business gets to know people.”

Even though running the store was his job, Sebby said he enjoyed the work enough he would almost consider it a hobby. “Best job you could have,” he said. “I never wake up not wanting to go to work.”

Sebby graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978 and started working in the hardware store in 1979. He planned on owning the store from the start. Sebby and his then-business partner Dwight Tew bought the store from George Stowel, who had moved the store to Main Street from its location in the Crowe Building on Highway 3. In 1988, Sebby took full ownership.
