Sheriff's department: protecting roads and communities

With the Clarion Lights for a Cause and the Clarion Chamber and Development’s Wright County Heroes Week recognition approaching, this week we’re highlighting our sheriff’s department. The men on this force patrol and investigate crimes in the rural areas of the county as well as overseeing the jail and many civil processes. Without their crucial support, our roads and communities would be much less safe.

What they do

“The Sheriff’s Deputy’s average shift consists of 12 hours in which we respond to all emergent and non-emergent calls throughout Wright County,” Chief Deputy Jeremy Hogrefe said. “We do investigations ranging from domestic assaults, traffic accidents, drug activity, and all other crimes.” He also said that both the sheriff’s office and the county’s different police departments overlap in some of their duties, like patrols and investigations. However, their department also handles the majority of civil paperwork, like gun permits, the sex offender registry, serving papers from the courts and transporting mental health patients.

“There is no such thing as a typical day as a sheriff’s deputy,” Hogrefe said. “That’s what’s nice about our job, is that every day is different. Most days you respond to calls of service, check towns within the county, and patrol. Some days are busier than the next.”
