Sheriff's department introduces K-9 Brit

Since 2003, the Wright County Sheriff’s Department has protected the community with not only its officers, but the help of a service canine trained in narcotics detection and other tasks. This spring, K-9 unit Ali retired, and with the support of the community, the department’s K-9 handler, Deputy Adam Nerlien, has now taken on a new dog: Brit.

Brit is an 18-month-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix who was purchased from North Iowa K-9, a facility located near Fort Dodge. Since the end of June, he’s been everywhere with Nerlien, and was also approved as a deputy in the Sheriff’s Department by the county supervisors.

“He’s just kind of getting used to going to work with me,” Nerlien said.

To be certified as a team,  next week Nerlien and Brit will be heading back to North Iowa K-9 for additional training. They will work together 8-10 hours every day and cover Brit’s key duties: narcotics detection, handler protection, tracking, and article recovery (finding objects from a crime scene).

The sheriff's department also wanted to thank the many organizations and individuals who donated toward the new K-9 officer. Without community support, the program would not be possible. See the July 20 edition of the Monitor for the full story.
