"Quilts Across the Heartland"

The Heartland Museum’s “Quilts Across the Heartland” show will be on display until the end of the month. If you’re at all interested in quilting, design, or local history, you won’t want to miss it.

Quilts range from holiday-themed or patriotic to floral, family heirlooms to T-shirt quilts. In total, 67 quilts and quilted crafts are on display, some displaying intricate quilting designs or piecing work, some most interesting for the history behind them or the people who made them.

The oldest quilt in the collection was made around 1870 and contains fabrics from the Civil War era. It was submitted by the Betty Brooks Robinson family and pieced in a “delectable mountains” pattern. Tying into other aspects of the Museum, family of Alvina Sellers provided two quilts for the show that Alvina made herself, both in beautiful appliqued floral patterns. Another notable quilt was hand-embroidered with the designs of plants that were important on a family farm. The quilt was made by Sylvia Jane Brockschink Schulte and given as a gift to her daughter-in-law, Florine Swanson.
