Mid-Summer Road Construction Update

Road construction on Highway 3 recently reached Clarion, where the route locally becomes Central Avenue.

According to Roy Gelhaus, Resident Construction Engineer at the Iowa Department of Transportation, tile work and patching has already been completed in Clarion and is expected to be completed by press time in Humboldt at the project’s western edge. For the next several months, a contractor will also work on the sidewalks along Central Avenue to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The changes will widen the paths, decrease the incline of entrances, and add truncated domes (small raised knobs) to signal to visually-impaired walkers where streets begin.

As the construction moves downtown, drivers will also not be able to park along Central Avenue / Highway 3 in Clarion’s downtown blocks. Businesses will remain open as usual. Drivers can expect sporadic lane closures through Clarion for the next several months.

For more updates on Highway 3’s construction project, the bridge south of Belmond, the Woolstock French Church bridge (it’s complete!), and county roads, see the July 24 issue of the Monitor!
