Local captures first place at national pedal pull contest

At five years old, wearing a dress and flip flops, Ellie Mewes won her first pedal pull contest at the Wright County Fair.

In September, Ellie earned first place in the eight-year-old division of the National Pedal Pull Championships, held in Mitchell, South Dakota, and will complete at the international level next summer where she will try to do as well or even better than her second place finish two years ago.

Mewes, wearing an all black t-shirt with the words “100 percent cowgirl” on it, talked with the Monitor September 19 about her albeit short but successful pedal pulling career so far.

The competition is fun, Ellie said with a smile. I am excited about going back to the internationals next summer.
