Iowa River Players Presents: Cinderella

Summer is meant for going to the pool, laying in the sun, putting in time working at a job de-tasseling or at the local stores for most school age youth, but not for those spending their time in Rowan, Iowa this June and July. While their friends are out enjoying the summer, the Iowa River Players have been learning the writing styles of Ben Crocker’s Cinderella. You may think you know the story of Cinderella, and chances are you are probably correct.

But, did you know that the Iowa River Players in Rowan, Iowa have been busy little mice, spiders, pumpkins and well… actors rehearsing, building sets, creating costumes and learning lines to immerse the public in some much needed comedy and magic this July? This is a revision that breathes new life into the classic. Fun and humorous are just a couple of words that come to mind after enjoying the characters brought to life by the cast and crew at Friday night’s opening.

The new style is a British pantomime comedy that draws the audience into the acts to become part of the play. The actors interact with the audience by speaking with them, the audience speaking to the characters, answering questions posed by the people on stage.

Sometimes entrances and exits through the audience even occur. The overall effect draws you into the world of Cinderella renewed!

Luanne Krabbe costumer, set builder, director and emcee is one of the original people, along with her sister, who helped to start up the Iowa River Players Theater nineteen seasons ago.
