Individual speech contest held locally

The Iowa High School Speech Association individual speech contests were supposed to take place Saturday, February 25. The snow storm meant that the contest at Clear Lake where Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Eagle Grove students were supposed to compete was delayed, but due to road conditions, both districts decided it would be too risky to drive students there.

Without competing in a district contest, speech students would not have the chance to go on to compete at the state level. To give students that chance, C-G-D speech coach Tamara EnTin arranged for the students to perform in front of judges on Monday night at the high school in Clarion. Eleven C-G-D High School students and 12 Eagle Grove High School students were able to perform.

C-G-D students who earned I ratings and will be going on to state are Paxton Etter (Senior) in Original Oratory and Literary Program; Katelyn Sikyta (Senior) in Prose; Erica Boeset (Junior) in Reviewing; Eevie Sherman (Senior) in Poetry and Radio News Announcing; Cheyenne Harle (Junior) in Poetry; Kaitlynn Fields (Senior) in Poetry; Gemma Pohlman (Sophomore) in Radio News Announcing; and Abigail Torres (Senior) in Spontaneous Speaking. These students will perform at State Contest on March 11 at Waldorf University. At State Contest, students who earn another I rating may receive All-State honors from the judges and will be able to perform at All-State at the University of Northern Iowa on April 4.
