Houser is AAUW Woman of the Year

Earlier this month, Clarion’s chapter of the American Association of University Women announced Betty Houser of Belmond as their 2016 Woman of the Year.

“Each year during March, which is Women's History Month, the AAUW Clarion Branch selects a woman whose life exemplifies the mission of AAUW based on education, advocacy, philanthropy and research. In addition, it is someone who has made an impact in her local community as well as her family,” said Florine Swanson, past Clarion branch AAUW president.

Houser has certainly made an impact during her 42 years of teaching in Forest City, Des Moines, and Belmond. In addition to teaching and her work in various educational societies, she has also participated in the Belmond Historical Society, the Iowa River Players, the Belmond chapter PEO, Century Club, St. Francis Catholic Church, and is on the advisory board for the NIACC Performing Arts Series.

Her teaching career began in 1973 after she graduated from The University of Iowa. She taught English and related subjects, and helped motivate students to learn with interesting activities like hosting guest speakers. “I really liked to have them get creative—not just write about something, but do something with it,” she said.
