Hospital seeks volunteers to continue culture of service

Volunteering is, in a way, the lifeblood of a community. It provides needed manpower and brings people together. It highlights the best parts of a community and seeks to relieve the hardest parts. In some cases, it’s vital to the function of important services. At Clarion’s Iowa Specialty Hospital, volunteers are currently needed to help visitors and continue to make the hospital a friendly and accessible place.

“They’re part of what makes Iowa Specialty what it is,” said Carla Kem, volunteer coordinator.

Many hospitals utilize volunteers for services like parking and greeting desks. In Clarion, the hospital needs close to 30 volunteers each week. Many people don’t know how much volunteers help out in the hospital.

“Unless they’ve been a patient, I don’t think they know how much it exists,” said Beth Lyons, a long-time hospital volunteer.
