George Reeves’ Super Family Day: March 22

If you were around in the 1950s, chances are you watched an episode or two of “The Adventures of Superman” starring George Reeves.  But did you know he was born George Keefer Brewer, son of Don and Helen Brewer in Woolstock, Iowa on January 5, 1914?  That means, this year would have been his 100th birthday.  To commemorate the occasion, a six-month area celebration has been planned in his honor.

On Saturday, March 22, it is this work, and all of his other accomplishments, that will be celebrated at the Heartland Museum in Clarion in the community room during the George Reeves’ Super Family Day.

“We are holding one event a month (January through June, 2014) to celebrate the life and career of George Reeves,” said committee member Veronica Guyader.  “Each (event) will be a different theme of his life.”

The March 22 theme will be his celebrating his portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent.  While she realizes that many of today’s children have not seen the “original” Superman episodes, she’s willing to bet their grandparents have.  While everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this free event, the committee is especially hoping that grandparents will seize the opportunity to bring their grandchildren out and show them what Superman was about in the very beginning.

“The Adventures of Superman” will begin playing at 10 a.m. and run through 1 p.m., with a brief interruption to give away door prizes during the noon-hour.  For an entry fee, families will also be able to enter the Heartland Museum hallways to see several displays of George Reeves’ work.

Children, and children-at-heart, are encouraged to come in their favorite Superman attire as well, be it a cape or a pair of pajamas.  Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson are welcome costumes, too.
