Former volleyball coach and player share state memories

Current Cowgirl volleyball coach Katrina TerHark is not the only one by that name in the history of the sport at the school district. Shelly TerHark, currently the AD and varsity volleyball coach at Algona High School, was the Clarion-Goldfield coach the first two times they made the state tournament in both 1994 and 1998. She agreed to share her memories of those teams.

She stated that the 1994 team was very determined to make it, as they had lost in five sets in the regional final the previous year. “The girls had a goal, and were very determined,” said Shelly TerHark. “There were a lot of returning players on that team, so while there were definitely nerves we were also playing teams we had seen during the regular season so there was some ‘comfortability’ at the same time.” She also remembers a lot of excitement that year because they had been so close so many times previously (between 1988 to 1993, she recalls the team losing more than once in a regional final)”.
