Cowgirls win thrilling game 44-43 at the buzzer

Stay cool and calm, and just take your shot.

That’s likely what Sydney TerHark was saying to herself as the ball was in her hands in the closing seconds of last Friday’s home game at Algona. The junior has already hit two of them earlier in the game, but neither were as big as that three-point swisher that won a 44-43 decision over the stunned Bulldogs and their fans as the Cowgirl fans and student section erupted. It was the team’s first win of the season after three straight losses to open the year.

Algona tried to set their dominance early, forging a 19-7 lead after a quarter. With the scoring even at six points apiece through the second period, the teams entered their locker rooms with Algona up 25-13. The home ladies had fire in their eyes in the second half, and proceeded to carve away at the deficit to then tie it at 30-30 to begin a back and forth fourth period. That led up to the game-winning heroics by TerHark.
