Cowgirls take seven events to state track meet

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls track & field team continued their tradition of being well represented at Drake Stadium each May by qualifying seven events for the biggest high school meet in the country later this week. Pocahontas Area will likely be the favorite in 2A, after taking the regional team title with 140 points at the Garner meet and qualifying numerous events. Central Springs was second with 109 points, and the Cowgirls third with 79 points.

“I thought we might get in eight events,” stated head coach Monty Harker. “It was a little chilly, but not too bad of a night.” Maddie Disney kept up her great long jump season by punching her ticket to Drake Stadium with a win at 15’ 9”. “She wasn’t thrilled with that mark, but it was still a good jump,” said Harker. Kenzie Alberts will be there in the 800 event, after taking the win in a 2:27.18 finishing time. “She won fairly easily, with about her fastest time of the year,” said Harker. Claire Davis will run the 400 after taking second place. “It was a good race between her and the Central Springs runner,” said Harker. “She’s about 12th in the state now. It’s her fourth time in four years in the 400.”

The team will send the shuttle hurdle, 4x4, sprint med and distance med relays as well. The shuttle took third in 1:10.74, the 4x4 third in 4:11.26, the sprint med second in 1:54.11 and the distance med first in 4:22.43 at Garner. “We broke the school record in the distance medley,” said Harker. “Meleah and Haley are new to that lineup, with Haley getting a :61 split. The changes we made worked very well. It was a very close race in the shuttle. Ana did extremely well. Jordyn hit a hurdle and almost fell, but kept going to finish. The sprint med dropped time again, and will be in the fast heat at state. Davis ran an outstanding leg with a 59.2 split. The 4x4 time puts us right up there. Kenna and Maddie had their fastest splits of the year.”
