Cowgirl golfers second at regional

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls golf team is just one step away from qualifying as a team for yet another state golf meet after taking second place behind Gilbert at this Monday’s regional first round tournament at the Coldwater Golf Links course in Ames. Gilbert had a 382 total, followed by the Cowgirls with 393 and Kuemper Catholic with 401. Shanee Tate tied for medalist honors with an 88 score, shooting 18-hole rounds of 45 and 43. The rest of the team scores were: Meghan Geary 51-49 for 100; Kaylee Smith 52-50 for 102; Cassie Hanson 47-56 for 103; Paeten Schultz 48-56 for 104 and Ashley Keller 54-56 for 110.

“It was a beautiful day to play golf and our girls did quite well,” said head coach Dan Smith. “This course will also be the site of the state tournament. The greens are fast and it’s a links-style course, meaning it has very few trees but plenty of taller native grass to add to the difficulty. We practiced there a bit earlier and did not do particularly well. We came in with the third-best average (212), behind Kuemper and Gilbert, and had not played extremely well at Forest City. I was confident in our chances of advancing. We then found out that two Kuemper girls were sick and could not play, while another was not feeling well. That increased our chances of reaching the top two.”
