Cowgirl golfers defeat three teams

Last Tuesday at Garner, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls varsity golf team opened the season with a 192-218 loss to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura. Carlee Frayne of the Cardinals was medalist with a 37, followed as runner-up by Bailee Fayne’s 40.

For the Cowgirls, it was Karlie Sellner leading the way with a 51 followed in counting cards by Paeten Schultz at 52, Meghan Geary at 54 and Cassy Mendoza at 61. Rounds were also played by Taylor Hagie (66) and Emma Konvalinka (68). The Cowgirl JV had no meet, but all of them still played a round. Scores were: Eden Polzin 70, Hannah Terhark 73, Hannah Tew 73, Phoebe Sanders 74, Cheyenne Harle 78 and Katie Haberman 79.

“The weather was quite good,” said coach Dan Smith. “The course was wt in many areas, but overall was in good shape for this time of year. I was very pleased with our 218 score. Karlie shot her personal best, and Schultz followed her with a good score. They were playing against two of the top golfers in our area. Carlee got an albatross on the par five hole, and it’s her first high school meet. Bailee placed third individually at state last year. I realize there’s room for improvement, and everyone wants to do better, but I could not ask for a better start to the season. We now have set the bar and given ourselves something to try to beat. I look forward to this group working hard and striving to bring that team score down below 210. That is my challenge for them now.”
