Cowgirl golf team wins meet in tough week

Last Tuesday at Humboldt, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls golf team ran into two strong competing teams in Clear Lake and Humboldt. The Wildcats took the tri-meet with a 192 score, followed by the Lions with 196 and the Cowgirls with 218. Emily Snelling of the Lions, one of the top golfers in 3A, was medalist with a 38 followed by Olivia Birdsell of Humboldt with a 46.

“It was a tough night for several of the girls against the top two teams in our conference,” stated head coach Dan Smith. “I tried to stress to them heading into it that it doesn’t matter whether we are playing a pro golfer or a fourth grader, because neither one can play defense on us. The only defense in golf is the course and weather conditions, along with the golfer’s own mind. These are the meets that we need to use as building blocks as far as dealing with adversity and comparing ourselves to others. I felt some of our players allowed themselves to feel less confident because of the opponent. I believe some of them struggled to keep their patience because of slow play by some opponents. The bottom line is, if you want consistency in your game you cannot allow outside factors to enter into your head and take away from your game. All in all, it was good to face better competition to help us develop as individuals and as a team.”

Counting varsity scores were: Paeten Schultz 52, Ashley Keller 54, Kaylee Smith 55 and Meghan Geary 57. Other rounds were played by Shanee Tate with 58 and Cassie Hanson with 62. Humboldt won the JV meet, 224-268. JV scores were: Taylor Hagie 56, Karlie Sellner 61, Madison Kubly 73, Sarah Seaba 78 and Alex Keller 80.
