Cowboys third in their pool at Battle of Waterloo

The Cowboy wrestling team took part in the Battle of Waterloo last Friday and Saturday at Young Arena. In the Friday session, teams were bracketed with the format the same as the State Duals. The Cowboys started with a 46-32 win over Pleasant Valley, then defeated a familiar state foe in Alburnett 42-30 to move into the championship dual. They lost that to Valley by a 45-22 score, the team that would go through Saturday to win the overall title.

In the meeting with Pleasant Valley, Justin Portillo (120), Calen Rosenbaum (132), Tanner Abbas (138), Mason Carpenter (170) and Salvador Fregoso (220) all pinned their opponents with Carpenter securing his win in 1:20. Josh Portillo (126) took a 15-2 major decision, with Chance Konopasek (106) and Connor Johnson (113) both having their hands raised by forfeit.

Against Alburnett, it was Carpenter taking the only win by fall and doing it in just 32 seconds. Josh Portillo took a win by technical fall 15-0, while Abbas won a major decision 18-8. Justin Portillo won easily 16-9, Rosenbaum snuck past his opponent 6-5 and Brott won his match 7-5. Sam Wigans (170), Ben Powers (195) and Caden Hanson (220) all took wins by forfeit.
