Cowboys take 4-0 win over West Hancock

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball team started their new season on a great note, taking a 4-0 win over West Hancock. The victory was highlighted by a two-run homer by Nate Rapp, who finished 2 for 3 at he plate. Brier Boyd was also 2 for 3 and brought in a run. Bryce Brinkman and Mateo Martinez both contributed singles in the win, with Martinez crossing the plate once as well. Reed Abbas scored the other two runs, and Tyler Stein had an RBI. Martinez made two steals and Abbas one. Carter Dietz used a keen eye in drawing two walks, with Stein and Abbas getting one free pass each.

Boyd took the win on the bump, walking only two and fanning two batters over four innings. Stein contributed five K’s in his three innings of work.

“We had all nine guys contribute in a complete team effort,” stated head coach Nick Willwerth. “Boyd and Stein were dominant on the mound, throwing a combined no-hitter. Defense made the big plays needed behind them to keep their pitch counts low. Krueger had a great heads-up play, backing up an overthrow at third that led to a put-out at home. I felt that really killed any momentum they had going. Rapp called a great game behind the plate after we made some adjustments, and couldn’t have had a better debut at the plate in a Cowboy baseball uniform in hitting a two-run bomb in the first.”
