Cowboys suffer tough home loss 59-14 to Spirit Lake

Pogge, Sann do the scoring

The Clarion-Goldfield varsity football team faced a major challenge last Friday in trying to get past a strong Spirit Lake squad. Even though the Cowboys were playing in front of their home crowd, they just could not find a way to stop the Indians defensively in a 59-14 loss.

“I felt somewhat optimistic after our first possession,” said head coach Paul Hansch. “We had an excellent scoring drive against a very good defense. However, that optimism quickly evaporated and the game disintegrated into the most lop-sided loss we have experienced in years.”

The Indians got on the board first with a 25-yard touchdown pass. The try for two failed. The Cowboys then took the kick, and executed a crisp drive with Zach Pogge eventually scoring on a 40-yard run at the 4:30 mark of the opening quarter. C-G also tried for a two-pointer, which failed knotting the score at 6-6. The Indians scored twice before the end of the quarter to make it 21-6 to start the second.
