Cowboys having trouble finding first win

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity baseball team opened their new season with a 13-0 loss to Roland-Story in five innings last Tuesday in Story City. The home Norsemen built an 11-0 lead by the end of the third inning.

Jacob O’Connor got the lone Cowboy hit, while he and Calen Rosenbaum each stole a base. O’Connor also drew a walk. Brendon Boyd took the loss on the mound, allowing eight earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He walked six and struck out two batters. Zach Martin finished up, allowing two earned while fanning three.

The Cowboys generated a bit more offense on Thursday in Jewell, but still lost to South Hamilton 8-4. Jarrod Littlejohn smashed a ball over the fence to drive in a run, while Tyler Steiner drove in two runs. Zack Leist and Rosenbaum also reached on singles, and both scored a run along with Martin. Boyd, Martin and Rosenbaum all recorded a steal each, with Leist showing a good eye in drawing two walks. Eryn Ulven also had a free pass to first base.
