Cowboys get roughed up in two games, then give better effort

It was a week that the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity baseball team would just as soon forget about and move on, and they did start to do some of that in finishing with a close 4-3 home loss to St. Edmond on Friday. The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead on the Gaels after an inning of play, only to see the Gaels go up 4-1 after five were in the book. They tightened up their laces and brought two runs across in the bottom of the fourth, neatly pulling it out at the very end.

Will Weidemann was 2 for 3, with Bryce Tegtmeyer going 2 for 4 with a double, and RBI and a run scored. Brendon Boyd doubled in his only contact, and drove in two runs in the process. Jacob O’Connor and Zack Leist both had a base hit each, with Tyler Stein and Zach Martin crossing the plate once each. Brendon and Tanner Abbas had a steal each, with Brendon, O’Connor, Reed Abbas, Tanner, Stein and Tyler Steiner all credited with a walk each.

O’Connor threw 5 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up four earned runs with two walks and four K’s. Martin pitched the balance, allowing no earned on two hits.

“Jacob had another good performance,” stated head coach Nick Willwerth. “He got ahead of hitters and was able to use his slider to keep them off balance. He’s done a great job all year, and gives us a chance to win every game he’s on the mound. When he’s got the ball, I know we’re in good hands."
