Cowboys defeat Bulldogs in final regular season game

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity boys basketball team enters this week’s district tournament on a nice roll, having won their last three in a row and four of the last five contests. Their latest victim was Hampton-Dumont, as the Bulldogs fell to the Cowboys 66-53 in the final NCC game of the season. It was 27-22 Cowboys at the break.

Three players reached double digits in scoring, led by Sam Urness who poured in 24 points including two treys and 6 of 8 at the charity line. Rhett Darland dropped 20 points thru the rim with four three-pointers included. Will Weidemann scored 10 points. Zach Martin added seven points, Alex Machuca four points and Bryce Tegtmeyer one point to the total. Riley State and Weidemann both grabbed six boards apiece, with Urness taking in five rebounds. Darland got his mitts on four caroms, Tegtmeyer and Martin two each and Machuca one.

Urness was unselfish in dishing out eight assists, with Darland getting credit for three and Martin two. Weidemann had one assist. Urness and Darland picked off six steals each, with Machuca and Martin getting three each and State two.

The team takes an 11-10 record in district tournament play.
