Cowboys corral the Broncos 50-27 in opener

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows/CAL varsity football team showed what their offense is capable of this year last Friday in a home-opener 50-27 win over Belmond-Klemme. All toll, they finished with four scores on the ground and three more through the air in a dominating performance.

A nice drive early culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by Nathan Rapp at the 8:42 mark of the quarter. The PAT try by Avery Harrington was no good. With 4:26 left in the first, quarterback Kainan Braun hooked up with Harrington on an 11-yard touchdown pass. The PAT, also courtesy of Harrington, was good making it 13-0. With just five ticks left on the clock, the Broncos made their first score as the quarter ended.

With 10:38 left in the second period, Braun took off on a keeper for 10 yards and a touchdown. The kick was blocked. The Broncos then posted two more scores to take a 21-19 lead, but the Cowboys were determined to enter the locker room with the lead. They culminated the drive with Braun tossing the pigskin to Harrington again on a pretty 24-yard touchdown pass. The two-point run by the quarterback made it 27-21 Cowboys at halftime.
