Cowboys continue down tournament trail after 2-1 win

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity baseball team got the most out of their eight total hits to score a nice 2-1 victory over Eagle Grove last Saturday in a 2A district opener at the Eagles home field. This sends the Cowboys into a matchup with the Indians at Forest City (Look for the results from that Tuesday game in next week’s Monitor).

Will Weidemann went 3 for 4 with a double, while Reed Abbas had one hit for an RBI. Brendon Boyd, Zack Leist, Tanner Abbas and Zach Martin all had base hits, with Jacob O’Connor also getting an RBI. Boyd and Leist scored the runs. O’Connor pitched a gem, giving up only one earned run on a two-hitter with no walks allowed and 10 K’s in going the distance.

“This was the most complete game we’ve played all year,” stated head skipper Nick Willwerth. “The kids were relentless in their energy and intensity for seven innings, and it was a lot of fun in that dugout and around that atmosphere. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the bench players for keeping up the energy level when we were on the field and at the plate. Jacob was dialed in on the mound, and had a dominant performance. He wanted the ball in his hand, and was determined to advance us to the next round. His fastball dominated all night as he racked up 10 K’s and didn’t issue a walk. Offensively, we were barreling up balls up and down the lineup and were able to run their starter off in the third inning. The Eagles outfield took away at least three runs on great defensive plays. The Cowboys have made great strides at the plate, and it’s great to see their work come to fruition late in the year. We beat a solid team, and I’m glad I get to coach these kids at least for two more days and hopefully more. We don’t want the season to be over yet.”
