Cowboys claim team title at Aplington-Parkersburg

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity wrestlers used three champions, along with four others placing at least third or higher, to take the team title again at the Keith Vry Invitational last Saturday at Aplington-Parkersburg. The red and black piled up 178 points, with Don Bosco a distant second at 142 points. The rest of the top five, in the 14-team field, were: Belmond-Klemme 139.5, Sumner-Fredricksburg 133 and AGWSR 88.

Justin Portillo took the 113-pound bracket, pinning his way to the championship with a fall in 2:22 over Guido of B-K. Tanner Abbas won his 138-pound class, taking a wild 16-11 decision over Hellman (DB) in the finals. Brady Brott finished first in the 145-pound class, finishing off Kime (S-F) by fall in 1:40.

Josh Portillo (120) and Sam Wigans (160) both placed second, while Calen Rosenbaum (132) and Ben Powers (182) finished third. Portillo won a semifinal match by technical fall, but then lost in overtime 6-4 in the finals. Wigans posted a 14-4 major decision to reach the finals, only to be pinned in that match. Rosenbaum took a 12-4 major decision loss in the semi’s, then came back to pin Parmely (MAQ. VALLEY) in the third-place match. Powers was pinned in the semi’s, then defeated Kroeze (B-K) 9-5.
