Cowboys beat Humboldt on the road in a thriller 60-59

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity boys basketball team had taken a 27-18 halftime lead and built on it to be up 49-35 to start the fourth quarter last Tuesday in Humboldt. That’s when things tried to come unraveled, as the Wildcats outscored their visitors 24 points to 11 but still fell short in a 60-59 Cowboy win.

“I thought we played excellent basketball through three and a half quarters in this game,” stated head coach Scott Herrig. “Defensively, we took away driving lanes and didn’t allow their shooters any good looks at the basket. They had a very nice post presence, and our defenders worked hard all night to get around and really make them work for anything inside. Offensively, I thought we moved the ball much better than we have so far this season.”

Sam Urness had a nice night on offense, firing in 20 points including a trey and a red hot 11 of 13 at the foul line. Rhett Darland scored 13 points, including tossing in three buckets from downtown, and Chase Harker added 11 points. Will Weidemann scored seven points, Zach Leist four points, Noah Maxheimer three points and Ryan Darland two points to complete that column. Rhett had six rebounds, with Weidemann grabbing five and both Urness and Ryan four each. Harker and Leist both had three each, with Derek Conlon and Maxheimer finishing with two each.
