Cowboys almost win team title, crown three NCC champs

In a wild battle for this year’s North Central Conference wrestling tournament title, Webster City edged out Clarion-Goldfield by a mere five points to take top team honors. The Lynx complied 203 points, with the Cowboys finishing out at 198. The rest finished in this order: Clear Lake 171, Humboldt 164, Algona 125, Hampton-Dumont 101.5, St. Edmond 70 and Iowa Falls-Alden 50. Eagle Grove did not send a team.

  Josh Portillo (113), Joel Haberman (126) and Mitch Gambrill (285) all took gold medals home for the red and black. Portillo opened with a fall in :55 over Meier (H), then finished off Barkema (H-D) by fall in 2:51. He defeated Leisure (CL) 5-3 for the title.
