Cowboy wrestling team takes second at Eagle Invite

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows varsity wrestling team took second place in the team standings at the annual Eagle Grove Invitational Tournament last Saturday. The five-round round robin format saw Fort Dodge Public take the title again with 254.5 points. The Cowboys were a distant second with 167 points, followed by Ankeny with 128.5, Eagle Grove with 122, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 91 and JV All-Stars with 82.

The Cowboys had four champions, as Josh Portillo (120), Tanner Abbas (138), Brady Brott (152) and Trent McAtee (285) all picked up gold medals. Portillo started his day with a bye, then stuck McNamee (ANK) in 1:10. He scored a technical fall 19-3 over Handy (FD), then after another bye pinned Graham (EG) in 1:35. Abbas started with a bye as well, then quickly disposed of Lalor (EG) by fall in 1:10. He made even quicker work of Hess (GHV), pinning him in just 34 seconds. He stuck Reichenbacke (ANK) in 1:51, then scored a 12-7 decision over Detmering (FD) in the final round.

Brott scored an opening fall over Trenary (All-Stars) in 1:36, then pinned Lyman (EG) in 1:09. He made quick work of Brammer (FD) by fall in just 26 seconds, then pinned Schoneman (GHV) in 34 seconds. McAtee took an injury default win in the opening round, then had a bye in round two. He lost to McCarville (FD) by fall, then quickly pinned O’Connell (ANK) in just 25 seconds. He finished with a round five pin of Mendoza (EG) in 2:40.
