Cowboy wrestling team sending 5 to state, win district team title

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team will be trying to equal, or even improve, on their third place team finish a year ago in Class 2A as this year’s State Wrestling Tournament kicks off Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena. Helping in that effort will be five individual qualifiers following the District tournament this past Saturday at Webster City. Making the trip will be champions Connor Johnson (126), Tanner Abbas (138), Reymundo Vasquez (160) and Spencer Trenary (285), along with runner-up Mason Carpenter (182). The Cowboys racked up 99.5 points to win the team crown, followed by Webster City with 96, Humboldt with 69, Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon with 52 and Woodward-Granger with 50.

Johnson took his bracket’s title with a fall in 5:13 over Anderson of Roland-Story. Abbas took a 12-7 decision over Rohmiller of Webster City in the finals. Vasquez won 3-2 over Arnold of Humboldt, while Trenary pinned Wegener of Algona in 3:23. Carpenter lost 7-0 in the finals, then avoided a wrestleback match by already having beaten Yoder of Greene County in his opener.

Finishing third on the day were Dakota Hennigar (152) and Ben Powers (195). Highlights for them included a 6-0 win for Hennigar over Reis of PA/L-M and a pin for Powers in 1:32 over Mennenga of Clear Lake. Finishing fourth was Tyler Stein (106) and Sam Wigans (170).
