Cowboy wrestling team advances 9 to districts, takes sectional title

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team took their first step in the quest for more postseason hardware to add to an already impressive haul in winning the Class 2A Sectional last Saturday at Algona. The Cowboys piled up 242 points to win the crown, qualifying them for a regional dual which was held this past Tuesday (read about the results of that in next week’s Monitor). They were followed in the final standings by: Algona (A) 187, Clear Lake (CL) 186, Pocahontas Area (PA) 158, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (GHV) 128 and Forest City (FC) 126.5.

Connor Johnson (126), Tanner Abbas (138), Dakota Hennigar (152), Reymundo Vasquez (160), Mason Carpenter (182), Ben Powers (195) and Spencer Trenary (285) all took titles in their respective weight brackets to automatically advance. Joining them in the trip to Wells Fargo Arena will be second-place finishers Tyler Stein (106) and Sam Wigans (170), with both avoiding a wrestleback match after beating those opponents earlier in the day. Abbas will be trying for his third appearance at state, Johnson his second.

Title matches include Johnson taking a 9-0 major decision over Cole Johnson of Algona, Abbas winning by a technical fall 20-5 over Kristian Gunderson of Forest City, Hennigar pinning Tyler Reis of Pocahontas Area in 1:54, Vasquez scoring a 15-7 major decision over Austin Chase of Algona, Carpenter picking up a fall in 1:06 over Philip Minkler of Pocahontas, Powers winning a 6-1 match over Dalton Mennenga of Clear Lake and Trenary winning by injury default over Josh Wegener of Algona.
