Cowboy wrestlers win Guthrie Center tournament

With six wrestlers placing at least fifth or higher, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team held off Van Meter to win the Charger Invitational last Saturday at Guthrie Center. The Cowboys compiled 169.5 points, with Van Meter finishing close behind with 156 points. They were followed in the top five of the 22 team field by Panorama, Panora with 147, Underwood with 130 and Woodward-Granger with 128.

Tanner Abbas (138) and Spencer Trenary (285) took gold medals for the day. Abbas used three consecutive falls to move into the finals where he dominated Joint of West Central Valley in a 20-7 major decision. Trenary scored falls in all four of his matches, taking the last one in 2:48 over Maher of Riverside in the finals.

There were no second place finishes, but Connor Johnson (126), Mason Carpenter (170) and Reymundo Vasquez (182) all took home bronze medals. Highlights of those matches include two wins by technical fall (25-10 and 15-0) for Johnson, a win by fall in 3:10 for Carpenter over Haub of Ogden and a 9-7 overtime victory for Vasquez over Hale of Van Meter.
