Cowboy wrestlers defeat Algona, take seventh at Ames

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team hosted Algona last Thursday and defeated the Bulldogs 63-9. Reed Abbas (138), Mason Carpenter (170), Colby Lienemann (182), Kain Nelson (220) and Spencer Trenary (285) all won by fall with Carpenter’s 58-second pin being the fastest. Connor Johnson (132) scored an 18-3 technical fall, while Reymundo Vasquez picked up a 13-4 major decision for bonus points. Three others won by forfeit.

On Saturday at the Jack Mendenhall Invitational in Ames, Cedar Rapids Prairie took the team title with 174.5 points in a tight battle. Finishing in the top five behind them were West Des Moines Valley with 173, Cedar Rapids Kennedy with 172, Ballard with 150 and Iowa City High with 150. The Cowboys were seventh out of 17 teams.

While they had no champions crowned, the Cowboys did have Trenary grab the second place medal in his bracket. He won his first three bouts by fall before dropping a tiebreaker 3-2 to Sanders of Glenwood. Sam Wigans (152) and Carpenter both took bronze medal spots. Reymundo won a major decision 12-4 as part of his day, while Mason scored a technical fall win 16-0 and two pins to earn his points.
