Cowboy golfers take fifth at conference tournament

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys varsity golf team hosted the North Central Conference tournament this past Monday at the Clarmond course. Webster City took the team title with a 309 total, followed in order by: Clear Lake 312, Humboldt 345, St. Edmond 346, C-G-D 363, Iowa Falls-Alden 371, Algona 375 and Hampton-Dumont 438. Medalist for the tournament was Connor Shannon of the Lynx with an 18-hole score of 72. Cowboy scores were as follows: Alec Martin 89 (19th); Zach Martin 90 (tie 20th); Dalton Nesheim 90 (tie 20th); Will Weidemann 94 (tie 27th); Blake Jackson 94 (tie 27th) and Brendon Boyd 99 (33rd).

"We didn’t play to our potential," said coach Pat O’Brien. "Losing confidence in our game is an issue, and we are struggling with believing in ourselves and fighting through adversity. We are inconsistent, which tells me it’s not a skills problem as much as it is a thought problem. The best way to get better faster, and be more confident, is to know we have the skills to save it around the green. We will be working on that aspect this week as we prepare for sectionals.”

Prior to that, they hosted a tri-meet with Algona and St. Edmond on Tuesday. The Bulldogs and Gaels tied in the varsity portion at 172, with the Cowboys ever so close behind at 174. Counting cards were turned in by Nesheim with 39, Alec with 42, Weidemann with 45 and Zach with 48. Other rounds were played by Boyd and Jackson with identical 49 scores.
