Clarion Shopko set to close in May

When the nationwide retailer Shopko announced that they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in mid-January, many shoppers in Clarion no doubt breathed a sigh of relief that their local store was not on the list of the dozens that were set to close. However, the relief was short-lived as the company announced another round of sweeping store closings last week, this time including Clarion’s Shopko Hometown store. According to information on Shopko’s corporate website, the store is slated to close around May 12th.

            The west side of Clarion has long been home to a major retailer with Shopko being the most recent. The Shopko Hometown store opened in Clarion in 2012 after the company merged with Pamida, which previously occupied the space. Shopko, a company that started in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1962, has been in hot water since last year.
