City council hears from Clarion Pride

Twenty-five members of the Clarion Pride committee crowded the council chamber at Monday night’s city council meeting. Though they pointed out some problems they wanted the council to address, they also said they wanted to work with the council to improve the appearance and value of the city.

Peggy O’Neill, temporary chair for the Clarion Pride Committee, thanked the council for their efforts so far and gave some information about Clarion Pride’s work. She said the group had originated as a committee of the Chamber of Commerce and had been growing since last year. “We discussed cleanliness, we took pictures, we went around town and located areas we thought were blighted or dilapidated,” she said. “To date, we have raised $3,600, and we have applied for grants for paint.”

She then introduced Denny Bowman to speak for the group. He started by highlighting some of the positive things about Clarion’s appearance, particularly regarding businesses in town.

“It took me 10 minutes to find 30 [recent] improvements in Clarion,” he said. “I challenge you to look at anther town in north central Iowa with 3,000 or less people who have accomplished as much or put as much money as Clarion has in the last five years alone.” Bowman didn’t shy away from problems in Clarion, however. “We are lagging in residential improvements,” he said.
