Career Day at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Middle School

For the tenth year, students at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Middle School got the chance to learn about a variety of careers during their career day on March 23. Students could choose seven out of 47 possible sessions, then try four more activities, allowing them to learn about a wide variety of interesting careers, from welding, to real estate, physical therapy, veterinary technician work, retail, emergency medical, and more.

Margaret Askelsen, middle school counselor, that about a dozen of the speakers were Clarion area graduates, some based locally, some working in other parts of Iowa.

“We had a lot of Clarion grads come back,” Askelsen said. “We want to show the kids what they can do someday.”

Most of the morning sessions were a talk with questions and answers, while the afternoon sessions were geared around demonstrations and activities. The Clarion Emergency Medical Service showed students how to load a patient into an ambulance; students tried cooking with an instructor from Iowa Central Community College; some even tried acting with the Iowa River Players.
