Cardinal golfers just get by Cowgirls 223-214

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls varsity golf squad hosted Garner-Hayfield/Ventura this past Monday at Clarmond to open their season. The visiting Cardinals won with a 214, as the Cowgirls came to the clubhouse with a 223 total. Bailee Frayne of G-H/V was medalist with a 42, followed by the Cowgirls Kaylee Smith with a 53.

“The weather was chilly, but it was nice to not have to deal with strong winds,” said head coach Dan Smith. “The thing that impressed me the most was the number of putts our girls averaged per hole. We were very close to two putts per hole, which is really great this early in the season. We have not had much green time at all in practice, so I am pleased with are overall putting.”

Following Smith’s score, other counting cards were turned in by Cassie Hanson with 54, Shanee Tate with 55 and Paeten Schultz with 61. Also playing varsity rounds were Taylor Hagie (68) and Ashley Keller (71). “Our goal is to just enjoy what we are doing, stay positive in the moment and continue to improve,” said coach Smith. “We will build on that and work on bringing those scores down.”
