C-G-D vs. Eagle Grove Alumni football game

Football season doesn’t start for a few more months, but local high school alumni players are already back on the field, preparing for a little friendly battle against one of their former high school rivals.  Eagle Grove High School alumni are scheduled to take on the alumni football players of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows in the game of the summer on Friday, June 17.  Kick-off begins at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go towards charities of the teams’ choice—the Eagle Grove Sports Boosters and a youth charity yet to be decided.

Eagle Grove Boosters President Travis Woodbeck said he was inspired to organize the game after seeing a post on Facebook that Algona High and Bishop Garrigan were holding an alumni game.

“Once I saw that, I called Alumni Football USA and Chuck Hulke and I talked about the details,” said Woodbeck.  “I knew as the president of the Sports Boosters this would be a great opportunity to raise some money and get the community involved with a different type of fundraiser.

“We’ve got a lot of guys who are excited,” said Clarion Team Captain Joseph Christians. “There’s a couple who’ve said they’d definitely like to see it happen next year.”

Christians said they had alumni coming from as far as Iowa City to play, but they were hoping to add more players before the final practice June 11. He also pointed out that alumni of Dows and Goldfield are eligible to play, as are faculty and parents of current or recent C-G-D students.
