C-G-D High School’s new principal eager to start a new chapter

An old basketball warm-up suit adorns the wall of Sheila Hudson’s office. It belonged to her father, who graduated from the same school that Hudson is now in charge of. As the new principal at Clarion- Goldfield-Dows High School, Hudson herself is relatively new to the area, but her father was a Clarion native and that family connection has made her transition into a new life more manageable.

“Clarion has always held a warm spot in my heart,” said Hudson at the end of her second day of the new school year.

For fifteen years Hudson was a professional development coach for West Des Moines community school district but this summer presented her with a new opportunity as C-G-D school district advertised for a new high school principal.

Hudson’s previous position allowed her to travel the country to observe the best educators around and build a network of contacts to draw from. She hopes that she can utilize that experience and network to benefit the district.

Going for the job has meant big changes for Hudson as she transitions from the big city to her father’s rural home, but the timing was right. Hudson’s two children have left the nest and her husband, a West Des Moines attorney, is working on establishing a satellite office for his practice in Clarion.
