C-G-D board of education reviews new student handbooks

During the August meeting of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education, High School Principal Sheila Hudson and Elementary Principal Tricia Rosendahl appeared to present their updated student handbooks. The handbooks are done annually, though most changes are small. Hudson pointed out some bigger changes in the high school/middle school handbook, including the new terms of Senior Release. Release will be available all year to seniors with a 2.0 GPA or higher who are passing all their classes.

Another big addition Hudson noted was the new cell phone policy. Hudson said they were concerned that cell phones in classrooms are “not creating a correct learning environment.” Students will place their phone (on silent) in a pocket storage container when they come in the classroom and retrieve it when they leave. Board member Clint Middleton commented that the policy is a good plan as long as all teachers enforce it in the same way, which Hudson noted will be done. Finally, the principal pointed out that Juuls, vaping devices and e-cigarettes have been added to the list of banned substances.

Rosendahl noted a few changes for the elementary handbook, including schedule changes. Breakfast will be starting earlier since more kids are now coming for that meal. She also said that they added language about being respectful towards bus drivers since that was a concern for them recently.
