Bike Rodeo at C-G-D Elementary

Students in the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows district are done for the year on May 31. Right now, kids are getting excited for summer vacation and activities outdoors—like biking.

During the last week of class, elementary School Nurse Katie Stecher and the school assembly committee made sure the students would be safe on their bikes during the summer with a Bike Rodeo workshop. Three representatives from the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital came and gave a safety presentation, and two workers from the Bike Shop in Fort Doge did some bike maintenance for the students.

“It’s the first time we’ve had them do it,” Stecher said. “It’s a wonderful event.”

Donations from the children’s hospital and others allowed the school to give away helmets to any student that wanted one during the event. Pam Hoogerwerf, Lauren O’Donnell and Kristel Wetjen with the hospital helped students fit their helmets properly and taught about the importance of protecting the brain and spine. Students also got to experience an obstacle course where they learned hand signals for turning. Last, Chris Walker and Mark Gales helped students pump tires and fix brakes, and also gave away two bikes.
