After one year absence, Cowboys headed back to State Dual Tournament

For the sixth time in the last seven years, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team will be in the Class 2A field of eight at the State Dual Team Tournament this week in Des Moines. They won back-to-back titles (1A) in 2014 and 2015, and took second place (2A) two years ago.

They earned the trip by defeating both Algona and Spirit Lake Park last Tuesday at home. They started the night by knocking off the conference rival Bulldogs 54-13 with Tyler Stein (106), Remington Hanson (113), Kamren Jergenson (145) and Sam Wigans (160) all scoring falls. Stein was the quickest in a mere 1:38. Keaton Wilson (120) had a 13-2 major decision, Connor Johnson (132) a 17-1 technical fall, Reed Abbas (138) a 17-8 major decision and Tanner Abbas (152) a 23-6 technical fall for extra points.

They defeated the Indians in the nightcap on falls by Stein, Wilson, Johnson, Reed, Tanner, Colby Lienemann (182), Camden Hanson (195) and Trenary. Lienemann was the fastest, hardly breaking a sweat with a 10-seconds pin. Vasquez put up a 13-5 major decision.

“We came out a really wrestled strong and competed well for the entire night,” stated head coach Dan Gabrielson. “Collectively it showed our strength, which is depth and balance throughout the lineup. It’s nice to get back to state duals!”
