2015: a year in review

Here is a list of just a few of the news highlights of 2015.

January

Logan Nelson and Taylor Kruger are crowned Winterfest King and Queen at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Friday, January 16.

February

The Cowboy wrestling team is officially set to return to Des Moines to defend their Class 1A State Duals title. They win the title and earn second place and a runner-up trophy in the Traditional State Wrestling Tournament.

March

The First Annual Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Sports Boosters Banquet takes place on March 7 at the Clarmond Country Club. NFL player Jeremiah George is the keynote speaker.

April

Ray Cooper, a veteran from Goldfield, is honored with the presentation of a POW medal by Senator Grassley. Cooper was a POW for three years at Camp Pyotong in North Korea.

May

Bird flu strikes Wright County with an estimated 2.8 million birds suspected to be infected at a commercial laying operation.

June

Clarion’s official 150th anniversary celebration is held the weekend of June 13. The celebration includes a Geocache History Hunt, special food and music event, tours, a 5K race, a luminary launch, pancake breakfast, and parade.

July

Shelley Pohlman retires as Clarion City Administrator after three years as administrator and 30 total years working in City Hall. Clarion welcomes the new administrator, Dustin Rief.

August

The Clarion Locker, run by Manie and Elmarie Nel, wins first prize for bratwurst at the Iowa State Fair.

September

In a special fundraiser hosting Iowa country singer Jake McVey, Fuel raises $5,900 for the Clarion Volunteer Fire Department, Lake Cornelia Restoration, and the Alzheimer’s Association.

October

The 87th and final Union Aid meeting was held at the First United Presbyterian Church in Clarion on Thursday, October 1.

November

Inspirational speaker Chris Norton tells C-G-D and CAL students to persevere and encourage others, lessons he learned recovering from paralysis following a football injury.

December

Clarion Christmas Lights for a Cause, a music and lights show put on by Tom Frantz and family, raises money for Wright County Hospice.
